Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of bolstering their attack in the January transfer window might be complicated by the unwanted presence of Timo Werner. The German striker, signed on loan from RB Leipzig at the beginning of the season, has failed to live up to expectations and become a burden for the club.
The 28-year-old has had a disappointing loan spell in North London. With minimal playing time, starting only three Premier League matches, he hasn’t been able to make a significant impact. His latest appearance, a brief substitute role in the 2-2 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers, offered no improvement, as Werner once again failed to score.
Werner’s contract with RB Leipzig runs until 2026. This means a return to Germany is inevitable by next summer unless an alternative solution is found. However, the situation is further complicated by Leipzig’s reluctance to take him back in January. According to Bild, the German club is hesitant to take on Werner’s hefty annual salary of €10 million (£8 million) amidst his poor form. This addition would strain their budget, especially considering his struggles to rediscover his scoring touch.
Werner’s situation is a stark reminder of his decline. Once regarded as Germany’s top striker, he thrived during his first stint at RB Leipzig, scoring an impressive 95 goals in 159 matches between 2016 and 2020. These performances made him a key player for both club and country. However, his goalscoring prowess has significantly diminished, leaving him a fringe figure at Tottenham.
With the January transfer window approaching, speculation surrounding Werner’s future will likely intensify. While Tottenham seem eager to offload him, Leipzig are equally cautious about integrating an out-of-form player back into their squad. Whether he remains in the Premier League or returns to Germany, one thing is clear: Werner needs a significant improvement in form if he hopes to reclaim his status as a top European striker.
