Juventus midfield talent picks Tottenham over trio of Premier League rivals as January deal takes shape

Fagioli has struggled for regular playing time at Juventus since the arrival of new coach Thiago Motta in the summer, and recent reports suggest that Tottenham are aiming to secure a move for the young midfielder. The deal is reportedly expected to be worth around €25 million (£20.7 million/$26 million), a fee that could prove sufficient to lure the player away from the Allianz Stadium.

Several Premier League clubs, including Fulham, Crystal Palace, and West Ham, have also reportedly shown interest in Fagioli. However, the player is said to prefer a move to Tottenham, seeing the club as a more prestigious option in comparison to the others. This has put Spurs in a strong position to finalize the deal ahead of the January transfer window.

Juventus, on the other hand, is said to be willing to part with Fagioli, especially if they can recoup a fee in the region of €25 million. Former Juventus defender Sergio Porrini even suggested recently that the club should look to offload Fagioli in January, as he is not considered indispensable in the current squad. “If the right amount were to arrive, I would honestly sell him,” Porrini stated. “In this Juventus, there is no star. Everyone is important, but no one is irreplaceable.”

While Fagioli is a talented attacking midfielder with a strong creative vision, some have questioned whether he is the type of player Tottenham need at this moment. The club has been struggling defensively this season, with Postecoglou facing challenges in securing a solid defensive partnership at the back. The midfield also lacks a true holding player to protect the defense, with Yves Bissouma’s form being inconsistent and Pape Sarr more of a box-to-box presence than a defensive anchor.

The return of Rodrigo Bentancur from his seven-match suspension, starting with Tottenham’s Boxing Day match against Nottingham Forest, will provide Postecoglou with more stability in midfield. However, the need for additional reinforcements in that area remains pressing. Fagioli, although not a defensive-minded player, could still offer much-needed creativity and technical ability in Tottenham’s midfield, helping to balance out their squad and offer a different dimension to Postecoglou’s setup.

The potential arrival of Fagioli adds to an ongoing series of transfer rumors surrounding Tottenham, who have also been linked with moves for other players across Europe. Spurs are reportedly considering a £20 million move for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, following concerns over Fraser Forster’s performances in the Carabao Cup and Guglielmo Vicario’s long-term injury. Additionally, Tottenham striker Alejo Veliz, who has struggled for consistent game time at Espanyol since joining on loan, has been encouraged to consider a return to England in January, with Leicester City reportedly interested in a deal.

Tottenham’s January transfer activity is likely to be crucial as they look to recover from a tough first half of the Premier League season. With Postecoglou aiming to strengthen key areas of the squad, securing the signing of Nicolo Fagioli could provide a significant boost to their midfield options. Fagioli’s flair and creativity would complement the existing talent in Tottenham’s squad, and with his reported preference for Spurs over other Premier League clubs, it seems likely that the deal will come to fruition in the coming weeks.

As Tottenham seeks to reinforce their squad and challenge for European places in the second half of the season, the potential signing of Fagioli represents a significant step forward. Whether or not the young Italian can deliver the necessary impact in the Premier League remains to be seen, but he certainly has the potential to be a valuable addition to Ange Postecoglou’s evolving Tottenham team.
