Tottenham to offer player-plus-cash for Sunderland star in January

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering a player-plus-cash deal to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson in the January transfer window.
According to Tottenham News, former Spurs scout Bryan King believes a swap deal involving backup goalkeeper Brandon Austin could be a viable option for the club.
King acknowledged the need for Tottenham to strengthen their goalkeeping department, particularly in light of Guglielmo Vicario’s recent injury. He pointed out that Austin, despite being the designated backup, has struggled to gain any first-team opportunities under various managers.
“Tottenham definitely need to sign another goalkeeper,” King said. “However, signing Patterson in January might be difficult. Austin doesn’t seem close to getting an opportunity at Tottenham. Therefore, perhaps Spurs could offer Austin plus cash to sign Patterson.
“At present, Austin is Spurs’ number two, and it would make sense for Spurs’ number two to be offered in a deal for Sunderland’s number one. That is a deal which could happen. However, would Sunderland, who are pushing for promotion, want to get rid of one of their main assets?
“Money would need to be included, and I don’t think it would be small money, because at present Sunderland don’t need to sell, but Spurs do need to sign a goalkeeper because if anything happens to Fraser Forster, they could be in trouble.”
Patterson has been impressive for Sunderland this season, keeping seven clean sheets. His strong performances have attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Tottenham.
A swap deal involving Austin could be an attractive proposition for both clubs. It would allow Austin to gain valuable first-team experience at Sunderland, while also providing Tottenham with a talented young goalkeeper in Patterson.
However, Sunderland may be reluctant to part ways with their first-choice goalkeeper, especially with the club currently challenging for promotion to the Premier League. They would likely demand a significant cash sum in addition to Austin.
This potential deal highlights the need for Tottenham to address their goalkeeping situation. With Vicario sidelined and Fraser Forster approaching the end of his contract, the club needs to strengthen its depth in this crucial position.
The January transfer window will be crucial for Tottenham. The club needs to make smart decisions and sign players who can improve the team’s performance on the field.
The potential deal for Patterson is just one of the many transfer rumors surrounding Tottenham. The club is actively exploring various options to strengthen the squad and improve their chances of success in the second half of the season.
The coming weeks will be an exciting period for Tottenham fans as they eagerly await news on the club’s transfer activity.
