Rangers Fans Will Explode: £8.5m Summer Signing Now Linked With January Exit

Just when Rangers supporters thought the January talk would be about incoming business, a familiar fear is creeping back. Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reports that Rangers expect clubs to make formal approaches for Minsu Kim before the January window opens. That is not the same as an exit being agreed, but it is enough to make Ibrox nervous.

Kim arrived in the summer as a 20-year-old South Korean winger, and Rangers reportedly paid £8.5 million to Girona after triggering a release clause in his contract. He can play on either flank, and he was one of a dozen new faces as Derek McInnes overhauled the squad.

The frustrating part is that Kim hasn’t yet shown up where casual fans look first. He has no goals or assists, which could frame his start as underwhelming. Dig a little deeper, though, and the picture changes. Among Rangers players with more than 300 league minutes, he leads in open-play expected assists, key passes per 90 and successful dribbles. That is a player making things happen even if the finishing touch hasn’t followed.

The same report says the club remain pleased with his early performances under McInnes. Selling a young attacker midway through his first season would be hard to justify, and it would hurt Rangers financially as well as on the pitch, given what they paid.

The wider picture isn’t helping the mood. McInnes and chairman Andrew Cavenagh have both signalled that a quiet January is expected. A quiet window sounds sensible until a key creative player is lost with no one lined up behind him.

For now, this is speculation, and Rangers hold all the cards. If suitors do come calling in January, the board’s answer will say a lot about whether the club is building something or selling its best young assets
