£27m West Ham United player’s future in doubt after transfer bid claim

West Ham United are actively seeking a new striker in the January transfer window, a development that casts a long shadow over Niclas Fullkrug’s future at the club. Reports from journalist Neto on Soutimao indicate that the Hammers have made a €30 million bid for Corinthians striker Yuri Alberto, though the Brazilian club has rejected the offer and will not entertain a sale until the summer of 2025. This pursuit of a new forward highlights a pressing need within the West Ham squad, particularly in the attacking department. The team’s goal-scoring record this season has been underwhelming, with only 21 goals scored in 16 Premier League games.

Niclas Fullkrug, a summer arrival from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of £27 million, has yet to live up to expectations. While his 16 goals and 10 assists for Dortmund last season generated considerable excitement, his impact at West Ham has been limited. He has managed only one goal in six appearances across all competitions, hampered by injury issues.

Although judging a player’s performance based on a limited sample size would be unfair, West Ham’s active pursuit of another striker raises serious questions about Fullkrug’s long-term prospects at the club. At 31 years old, concerns linger about his ability to consistently overcome injury setbacks and regain his peak form.

The club’s interest in Yuri Alberto further emphasizes the need for a more potent attacking force. While Jarrod Bowen has been deployed as a makeshift center-forward at times, the pursuit of Alberto suggests that West Ham recognizes the need for a dedicated striker, particularly considering the potential departure of Mohammed Kudus to Arsenal.

The implications for Fullkrug are clear. If West Ham successfully acquire a new number nine, either in the upcoming January window or during the summer transfer period, his playing time could be significantly reduced. This scenario would undoubtedly impact his role within the squad and potentially diminish his chances of fulfilling his potential at West Ham United.
