McInnes must axe 4/10 Rangers dud who lost the ball 19 times – opinion

Rangers dropped two crucial points in a frustrating 2-2 draw with Dundee at Dens Park, leaving manager Derek McInnes with plenty of tactical headaches. While summer signing Badredine Bouanani offered a rare moment of magic by opening his account for the club with a clinical first-half strike, the general attacking play around him left much to be desired. Bouanani’s brilliant individual effort was repeatedly undermined by a lack of composure and fluidity further up the pitch, leaving the Algerian international visibly fuming as promise turned into costly errors.

At the heart of Govan’s offensive struggles was a hugely disappointing outing from Ryan Naderi, whose listless display warranted nothing more than a 4/10 match rating. Deployed to lead the line and provide a central focal point, Naderi instead proved to be a liability in possession, surrendering the ball a staggering 19 times throughout his time on the pitch. Every attempt to build attacking momentum seemed to break down at his feet, as poor touch, misdirected passes, and weak aerial duels repeatedly turned promising situations into counter-attacking opportunities for Dundee.

For Bouanani, who worked tirelessly to carve out space and create openings, watching his forward partner continuously gift possession back to the opposition proved immensely frustrating. The dynamic winger frequently found himself isolated or forced to track back after turnover after turnover in the final third. When Rangers needed a ruthless performance up front to put the game out of reach, Naderi failed to hold the line, leaving the creative spark in McInnes’ side completely unsupported and stranded.

With domestic competition intensifying and zero margin for error in the title race, McInnes cannot afford to show patience to players who fail to meet the required standard. Continuing to feature a forward who loses the ball nearly 20 times in a single match compromises the entire system, undoing the hard work of midfielders like Bouanani and Nicolas Raskin. Dropping two points against Dundee serves as a clear warning sign, and McInnes must make the bold call to axe the underperforming striker from his starting eleven ahead of the next fixture.
